Walter Fernandez founded PHL Taxi in April 2002. His involvement in the Philadelphia taxi industry dates back to 1987, as a driver. In 1997, he became an owner / operator, and from 1997 to 2001, he was elected as Treasurer and Secretary of the Brotherhood of Unified Taxi Drivers / Owners, an umbrella organization that represents Philadelphia taxi operators. Walter was the first taxi driver in Philadelphia to process credit cards from customers directly from his vehicle, in the year 2000. From the beginning, his focus has been on customer care: how to better serve the riding public. In 2002, he started his radio group with one taxicab, out of Essington, PA. At the time of the corporate merge, in May 2006, PHL had a fleet of 165 vehicles. Simon Abitbol, born in Morocco and raised in Israel, immigrated to the United States in 1973. Shortly after his arrival, Simon took his first steps into the transportation industry. He opened several companies including a limousine service, taxi brokerage and leasing / management company. Simon soon became an icon in the New York transportation industry. His success and leadership have prompted him to seek business ventures in other American cities, such Newark, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1999, Simon came to Philadelphia to help reform and improve the ailing local taxicab industry. In a very short period, he was able to provide the necessary tools that the industry was lacking to grow. Investing millions of dollars and setting up a brand new fleet of taxicabs in the streets of Philadelphia, Simon has had a major impact on this City. He was welcomed with open arms by renowned public figures, such as Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Philadelphia Mayor John Street, and PA State Representative Dwight Evans. Simon Abitbol is a person of vision and change to an industry that on the verge to collapse. He now owns and manages one of largest taxi fleets in Philadelphia, together with a finance and insurance brokerage company. These companies offer an array of financial products and services to the transportation industry, small business owners, and residential / commercial real estate.
